A nightguard is a custom-made, clear, soft (but durable) plastic mouthpiece that fits over the arch of your teeth to protect them and your joints (like your temporomandibular joint, or TMJ) from damage. There are myriad reasons you may need to wear a nightguard.
Nightguards are indicated as the first line of treatment for chronic bruxism and clenching. Nightguards may also be indicated for individuals with a significant number of dental restorations, either to protect the restorations or the remaining natural teeth, and to individuals with TMJ problems.
