Dental Sealants

Dental sealants are thin plastic coatings that are applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth (premolars and molars) to help protect them from decay.

The back teeth have pits and grooves on their chewing surfaces that are difficult to clean, making them more susceptible to decay.

Dental sealants are typically applied to children’s teeth as soon as their permanent molars come in (around age 6) and again around age 12, although adults can also benefit from them.

The process is quick and painless and involves cleaning and drying the teeth, applying an acidic solution to roughen the surface, and then painting on the sealant material. The sealant material is then hardened with a special light.

Once applied, dental sealants can last for several years and provide a barrier against plaque and bacteria.

Regular dental check-ups are still necessary to ensure that the sealants are intact and functioning properly.
