Signs a broken tooth can’t wait
Every chip should be checked soon, but any of these means it should be seen right away.
Broken teeth are seen the same day at both offices.
- The inner layer or nerve is showing
- It causes sharp pain
- A jagged edge is cutting your tongue or cheek
- A large piece of the tooth is missing
Until your visit
How to protect a broken tooth on the way in
The American Dental Association’s guide to dental emergencies gives the same first steps: rinse, save the pieces and see a dentist right away.
- 1
Keep the broken piece
Bring it along
Rinse any piece gently and carry it in milk or saliva in a clean container.
- 2
Use the other side
Skip hard, crunchy food
Chewing on a cracked tooth drives the crack deeper.
- 3
Keep it lukewarm
Soft, room-temperature food
Hot and cold cause a jolt of pain near the nerve.
- 4
Cover sharp edges
Dental wax or sugar-free gum
Protects your tongue and cheek from a jagged edge.
- 5
Call for today
Same-day visits
A chip that’s easy to fix now can need a root canal later.

Don’t wait on it
Why a broken tooth gets harder to fix over time
A fracture creeps further toward the root with everyday chewing, and the opening gives bacteria a way in.
A chip that bonding fixes today can turn into a tooth that needs a root canal, or an extraction, if it’s ignored. That’s why broken teeth are seen the same day.
- Chewing pushes a crack deeper toward the root
- Bacteria enter through the break
- That can turn into an infection
- Early repair keeps the treatment simpler

FAQ
Broken tooth repair: your questions, answered
Rinse your mouth with warm water, save any piece that broke off, chew on the other side and cover a sharp edge with dental wax or sugar-free gum. Then call Deluxe Dentistry & Esthetics: broken teeth are seen the same day.
It depends on how much is missing and whether the nerve is involved. A small chip is bonded, a broken front tooth can get a porcelain veneer, a larger break gets an all-ceramic crown, and a root canal comes first when the nerve is damaged. Dr. Godko chooses after an exam and x-rays.
No. Enamel and dentin don’t grow back or fuse together. Even a small chip leaves the tooth weaker and gives bacteria a way in, so it should be repaired.
A small chip is less urgent than a painful break, but don’t leave it. Chewing pushes cracks deeper, and a chip that bonding fixes today can need a root canal later.
Small chips are bonded in a single visit. Larger breaks get an all-ceramic crown: your new crown is placed the same day.
Not always. A crown is used when a large part of the tooth is gone or the tooth is weakened. A root canal is needed only when the break reaches the nerve or the nerve is damaged; the crown then protects the tooth.
Yes. A crack or break gives bacteria a path to the nerve, and an untreated infection can become an abscess. That’s one reason broken teeth are repaired promptly.
