The basics
What Is a Dental Bone Graft?
A dental bone graft adds bone, or bone-like material, to the jaw where bone has thinned or been lost. The graft is a scaffold: over the following months your body grows new bone into it, rebuilding the height and width your jaw needs.
Your jawbone stays strong because tooth roots stimulate it every time you chew. When a tooth is lost, the bone in that spot slowly shrinks, and gum disease, infection, injury and years of denture wear speed that up. Over time a gap can look sunken, nearby teeth drift, dentures loosen and the face loses some of its fullness. A graft rebuilds that bone, protects the teeth around it and gives an implant a solid foundation.

No. If your tooth came out recently and your bone density is good, the implant goes straight in. Grafting is for bone that has thinned after years without a tooth, long-term denture wear, gum disease or an infection. Your 3D CT scan shows which group you are in.
Yes, typically, when the shortfall is minor to moderate: Dr. Godko places the graft material around your implant during the same surgery. When the bone needs to heal on its own first, your implant follows at a later visit, and he tells you which path gives you the strongest result.
A small graft placed with an implant heals along with it. A larger graft generally needs several months to mature into solid bone, and the bigger the area rebuilt, the longer it takes. Dr. Godko checks the healed bone on a scan, and once it is ready your implant is scheduled.
A bone graft is typically done with local anesthesia, so the area is fully numbed before anything starts, and nitrous oxide, oral sedation and IV sedation, all given by Dr. Godko, are available for anyone who would rather relax through it. Afterward, expect some tenderness and swelling, and you are typically back to normal activities within a few days.

Yes. Every implant patient at Deluxe leaves with new teeth the same day the implant is placed. When a graft has to heal before the implant goes in, that happens at the later implant visit, and you still come in with missing teeth and leave with your new teeth the same day.
