FAQ

Periodontal maintenance questions, answered

A regular cleaning is preventive care for healthy gums, every six months, focused above the gumline. Periodontal maintenance is ongoing treatment for gums that have had gum disease: every three to four months, every pocket is measured, and the cleaning reaches below the gumline into the pockets the disease left behind.

The bacteria that cause gum disease rebuild in treated pockets within about three months. Cleaning them out before they can restart the damage is the whole point of the interval, and your pocket readings set whether yours is three or four months.

Every pocket is measured and compared with your last chart, the areas gum disease affected are cleaned below the gumline, and your gums, teeth and bone are reviewed, with digital x-rays when the dentist needs them. Your next visit is booked before you leave.

Anyone who has been treated for gum disease(periodontitis), usually with a deep cleaning, moves to maintenance afterward, because the pockets that formed stay vulnerable. Your exam decides whether maintenance or a regular cleaning fits your gums.

Yes. Periodontitis is a chronic condition: treatment brings it under control, but its bacteria can return to treated pockets even when your gums look and feel fine. That is why maintenance continues instead of a return to regular cleanings, and Dr. Maxim Godko adjusts your interval as your gums change.

It is caught at the next chart, and the next step happens in the same office, such as a repeat deep cleaning for that area or Arestin, an antibiotic placed in the pocket, explained with its cost first. A full deep cleaning again is needed only if the disease becomes active again.

Your readings show the progress: stable or shrinking pockets and less bleeding from chart to chart mean the disease is under control. Bone lost to gum disease does not grow back on its own, so maintenance protects the gum and bone you have; where gums have receded, gum grafting can rebuild them.

Plaque left at the gumline hardens into tartar, and its bacteria inflame the gums until they pull away from the teeth, forming pockets. As gum disease advances, the pockets deepen and the gum and bone that hold your teeth break down. Even after treatment, those pockets are hard to reach at home, so they are measured and cleaned at every maintenance visit.

Periodontal maintenance is priced at your personalized consultation, based on your gums, and you see your cost before treatment. We accept PPO plans and most carriers, including CIGNA, MetLife, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Delta Dental and GEHA Connection Dental. No Medicaid, DMO or HMO plans accepted. We work with your insurance to ensure you receive the maximum benefit. 0% financing through Cherry and in-house membership plans, including the Adult Perio Plan with four maintenance cleanings a year, are also available.
