FAQ
Nitrous oxide at the dentist: your questions
Laughing gas is nitrous oxide, a colorless, sweet-smelling gas mixed with oxygen and breathed through a small mask over your nose. It has been used in dentistry for well over a century and brings a relaxed, often euphoric feeling while you stay aware.
Quickly. You simply breathe normally through the mask, the relaxed feeling builds as you do, and treatment begins once you’re comfortable.
Yes. You stay awake, can talk with Dr. Godko the whole time and respond to anything he asks; you simply feel more relaxed. Some people find the details feel a little hazy afterward.
Yes. Laughing gas relaxes you; local anesthesia numbs the treatment area. The gas takes effect first, so the numbing is given once you’re already relaxed, which helps if needles make you nervous.
Yes. At the end you breathe pure oxygen, which clears the gas, and it wears off before you leave. Once you feel like yourself, you can drive yourself and head back to your day.
Yes. Nitrous oxide is one of the safest and most widely used forms of dental sedation. It is always breathed mixed with oxygen, you breathe on your own and stay in control the whole time, and there is no lingering grogginess once the gas is turned off.
Anyone with mild dental nerves, a fear of needles, a strong gag reflex, sensitive teeth or trouble getting numb, and anyone who finds it hard to sit still through a long visit or several treatments in one sitting. Nitrous oxide isn’t the right choice for everyone, so Dr. Godko decides with you which sedation level fits at your personalized consultation.
Yes. Oral sedation, a prescribed sedative pill taken before your visit, and IV sedation, a deep, sleep-like state, are both available, and with either one a companion drives you home. Dr. Maxim Godko is certified in all three levels and gives each himself.
Nitrous oxide is priced at your personalized consultation, so you know the cost before anything starts. We accept PPO plans and most carriers, including CIGNA, MetLife, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Delta Dental and GEHA Connection Dental. No Medicaid, DMO or HMO plans accepted. We work with your insurance to ensure you receive the maximum benefit. 0% financing through Cherry and in-house membership plans are available.
