Why composite

Mercury-Free, Bonded and Matched to Your Shade

Deluxe primarily uses tooth-colored composite, the filling most patients want today. The ADA’s guide to tooth-colored fillings covers the material.

Matches your tooth

Shaded to your natural color, so the repair disappears into your smile.

Mercury-free

Composite resin and fine glass particles, with no metal.

Bonds to the tooth

It adheres directly, adding support to what’s left.

Saves more tooth

Less healthy tooth needs to be removed to place it.

How a filling is placed

  1. 1

    Numb

    Comfort first

The tooth is numbed, so you feel pressure rather than pain.

  2. 2

    Clean

    Decay removed

The decay is removed and the tooth is prepared to bond.

  3. 3

    Bond & shape

    Layer by layer

Composite in your shade is placed in layers and shaped to your bite.

  4. 4

    Cure & polish

    Done in one visit

A curing light hardens each layer, then it’s polished and your bite is checked.

Quick self-check

Could it be a cavity?

Cavities don’t hurt until they’re big. Tap anything you’ve noticed.

Gloved hands with a dental mirror checking a patient’s mouth for cavities a tooth-colored filling can repair

Tap anything that sounds familiar

Catch them while they’re small

Hygienists check every tooth for decay at every cleaning, and bitewing x-rays find cavities between teeth long before they hurt.

The repair ladder

Filling, onlay or crown?

The goal is always to save as much of your natural tooth as possible. How much of the tooth is damaged decides the repair.

1

Small cavity

Filling

Repairs a small area of the tooth with tooth-colored composite, bonded in place.

2

Too big for a filling

Inlay or onlay

A tooth-colored “partial crown” for a cavity too big for a filling. Less tooth is removed than for a crown.

3

Heavily damaged tooth

Crown

A custom cap that covers the whole visible tooth to hold it together. Your new crown is placed the same day.

Lost or broken filling?

What to do until you’re seen

A filling that cracks or falls out leaves the tooth open to sensitivity and more decay. Call either office, and you’re seen as soon as the same day.

  • Keep the area clean
  • Chew on the other side
  • Avoid very hot or cold food and drinks
  • Call: broken fillings are seen as soon as the same day

FAQ

Tooth-colored fillings: your questions, answered

Composite resin, a blend of plastic resin and fine glass particles, shaded to match your tooth. It bonds directly to the tooth and contains no mercury.

Yes. Tooth-colored filling, white filling and composite filling all describe the same resin restoration.

Yes. Composite works on front and back teeth. When a cavity in a back tooth is too large for a filling, an onlay or a crown protects it instead.

The tooth is numbed first with local anesthesia, so you feel pressure rather than pain. If you prefer, nitrous oxide, oral sedation or IV sedation is available, all given by Dr. Godko.

With good care, composite fillings hold up well: brushing, flossing, regular checkups and a nightguard if you grind all help. Every filling is checked at your exams, so wear is caught early.

When an old metal filling is cracked, leaking or has decay around it, yes, and composite is the natural replacement. A sound silver filling isn’t replaced without a reason; your exam shows which ones need attention.

Yes. Composite is hardened with a curing light before you leave. Wait until the numbness wears off so you don’t bite your cheek or tongue.

No. Whitening lightens natural teeth, not composite. If you plan to whiten, do it first so new fillings can be matched to your brighter shade; see teeth whitening.
