Chipped, Cracked or Came Off?

Choose what you see for your first steps before the visit and how it’s fixed.

Do this now

  1. 1 Cover any sharp edge with dental wax or sugar-free gum.
  2. 2 Don’t bite with that tooth.
  3. 3 Call for a same-day visit.

How it’s fixed

A small chip is polished smooth or repaired with bonding at the visit. A larger chip means replacing just that veneer.

Small chips repaired at the visit

Why it happened

Why Veneers Chip, Crack or Come Off

Veneers are strong, but they aren’t indestructible. Knowing what broke yours is how the next one is protected.

Biting something hard

Ice, pens, fingernails, hard candy or opening packaging with your teeth can chip or crack porcelain.

Grinding and clenching

Night after night, the force wears and loosens veneers, especially on the front teeth.

A worn or failed bond

The bonding layer under a veneer can weaken over the years and let the veneer lift or come off.

A bite that hits it too hard

When a veneer takes more than its share of the bite, it chips at the edge.

Changes at the gumline

Gum recession or decay at the edge of the veneer can leave a visible line or loosen it.

A fall or a hit

Sports, falls and accidents can break a veneer and injure the tooth underneath.

When it needs replacing

How a Broken Veneer Is Replaced

  1. Step1

    Check

The veneer, the tooth underneath and your bite are examined, with digital x-rays when the tooth may be hurt.

  2. Step2

    Remove

What is left of the broken veneer is carefully removed, the tooth surface is cleaned and precise 3D scans are taken with state-of-the-art technology.

  3. Step3

    Protect

When a new porcelain veneer is made, a temporary veneer that looks, feels and acts almost like the permanent one covers the tooth.

  4. Step4

    Match and bond

The new veneer is matched in shade, translucency and shape, then bonded in place and polished.

Porcelain vs composite

Porcelain Is the Superior Choice

Porcelain and composite veneers are repaired differently, and a break is a good moment to choose the right material. Porcelain lasts longer and keeps its look.

FAQ

Broken veneer questions, answered

A small chip, yes: it is polished smooth or repaired with tooth-colored bonding at the visit. A large chip, a crack through the porcelain or a chip on the biting edge of a front tooth calls for a new veneer, made to match.

If it is intact and still fits, yes. The veneer and the tooth are cleaned, the tooth underneath is checked and the veneer is bonded back on at the visit. Bring it with you in a clean container.

Our in-house team. Veneers are placed, repaired, rebonded and replaced in-house, at either office, with the artistry and precise shade matching that keep your smile looking natural.

The veneer has no nerve, but the tooth under it can. Sensitivity to cold, pain when biting or swelling means the tooth needs to be checked, which happens at the same visit.

Sometimes, after a hard knock. Digital x-rays and an exam show whether the tooth is cracked or the nerve is affected. If it is, a root canal or a crown is done in-house before the veneer is replaced.

Precise 3D scans, taken with state-of-the-art technology, capture the shape, and the shade and translucency are matched to your neighboring teeth before the new veneer is placed.

Polishing, a bonding repair or a rebond costs less than a new veneer, and you see the price first, with new porcelain veneers starting at $1,500. We work with your insurance to ensure you receive the maximum benefit, and 0% financing through Cherry is available.
