The basics

What Is Oral Surgery?

Oral surgery is any surgical procedure on the teeth, gums or jawbone. Most of it happens right in a dental office, and you go home afterward. These are the most common reasons it is needed.

Common reasons for oral surgery

Impacted wisdom teeth

Wisdom teeth trapped in the jaw or gum that cause pain, crowding or infection.

A tooth that can’t be saved

Badly broken, decayed or infected teeth that a crown or root canal can’t rescue.

Missing teeth

Dental implants placed in the jawbone to anchor new teeth.

Bone loss

Bone grafts and sinus lifts that rebuild the jaw for implants.

Preparing for dentures

Smoothing and shaping the ridge so a denture sits evenly.

Infection or injury

Removing the source of an infection or treating a tooth broken below the gum.

Your Next Step Is Planned Before You Leave

Removing a tooth or grafting bone is rarely the last step. Because Dr. Godko also places implants and plans dentures and partials and bridges, the surgery is designed around what comes next.

When the tooth is replaced with a titanium implant, the gold standard with up to a 95% success rate, the extraction or graft is typically done at the same visit, and you leave with your new teeth the same day. FAQ

Oral surgery: your questions, answered

Oral surgery is any surgical procedure on the teeth, gums or jawbone. The most common are tooth extractions, wisdom teeth removal, bone grafting and dental implant placement, usually done in a dental office under local anesthesia, with sedation if you want it.

Simple and surgical tooth extractions, impacted wisdom teeth, pre-prosthetic surgery (including tori and excess gum tissue removal), socket preservation, bone grafting, sinus lifts, ridge splitting, platelet-rich fibrin and dental implant placement, all in-house at both offices.

Dr. Maxim Godko performs every surgical procedure himself, from extractions to implant placement, at both offices. He is an 8-Time Top Doctor and an NYU College of Dentistry graduate.

No. You can book directly, and you are never referred out to a specialist: Deluxe offers periodontal, endodontic, prosthodontic and oral surgery services under one roof, so the exam, the imaging, the sedation and the surgery all happen here.

Every procedure is typically done with local anesthesia, which numbs the area fully before Dr. Godko begins, so most patients feel only pressure. Nitrous oxide, oral sedation or IV sedation is added for patients who prefer it.

Nitrous oxide (laughing gas), oral sedation (a prescribed sedative pill) and IV sedation, which leaves you deeply relaxed yet able to respond. Dr. Godko gives all three himself and is certified in all three.

It depends on the procedure. After an extraction, most patients are typically back to normal activities within a few days, while the area keeps healing underneath; grafts and implants take longer to integrate. You leave with aftercare instructions, a follow-up visit is scheduled, and both offices are ready to immediately assist with any concerns.

After oral or IV sedation, yes: a responsible adult drives you home, and Dr. Godko tells you when it is safe to drive again. After nitrous oxide or local anesthesia alone, you can drive yourself once you are released.

Each procedure is priced at your personalized consultation, where Dr. Godko examines the area, explains your options and shows you the cost before treatment begins. Your insurance, 0% financing through Cherry and our in-house membership plans can all help.

Coverage depends on your plan and the procedure. We accept PPO plans and most carriers, including CIGNA, MetLife, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Delta Dental and GEHA Connection Dental. No Medicaid, DMO or HMO plans accepted. We work with your insurance to ensure you receive the maximum benefit.
