Four everyday fixes

What can dental bonding fix?

Bonding is a conservative, tooth-colored repair for small cosmetic flaws on healthy teeth. It can also cover a stain that whitening won’t lift or protect a small area of exposed root. It works best where teeth don’t take the heaviest biting force.

How does dental bonding work?

  1. 1

Check the tooth What it needs

The tooth is examined to confirm bonding is the right repair, not a veneer or crown. Any decay or gum problem is treated first.

  2. 2

    Match the shade Shade guide

A shade guide is held against your teeth to choose the resin color that blends with the teeth beside it.

  3. 3

Prepare the surface Little or no enamel removed

The surface is lightly roughened and coated with a conditioning liquid and bonding agent so the resin grips the tooth.

  4. 4

    Shape the resin Same appointment

Tooth-colored composite is built up in layers, sculpted, hardened with a curing light, then trimmed and polished to match the shine of natural enamel.

  5. 5

See it right away One visit

You leave with the repaired tooth and can eat and smile right away.

FAQ

Dental bonding: your questions, answered

Chips, small gaps, short or worn edges and uneven shapes. Tooth-colored resin is added to the tooth and shaped to match the teeth around it.

Yes. The resin is applied, shaped, hardened with a curing light and polished at one appointment, and you see the result before you leave.

Bonding is priced at your personalized consultation, by the number of teeth and what each needs. We work with your insurance to ensure you receive the maximum benefit, and 0% financing through Cherry and in-house membership plans are available.

In most cases, yes. Little or no enamel is removed, so bonding can be polished, replaced or upgraded to a veneer later.

That depends on the tooth and on you. Resin on a tooth that doesn’t take heavy biting force, brushed and flossed daily, kept away from ice, nails and pens, and polished at checkups holds up well; grinding without a night guard and daily coffee, red wine or tobacco wear and stain it sooner. When a bonded edge chips or dulls, it is repaired by adding and polishing new resin, not by starting over.

No. The surface is lightly roughened so the resin grips, and little or no enamel is removed.

Yes. The resin is shade-matched to the teeth around it. If you plan to whiten, whiten first, because bonding keeps the shade it’s made in.

Often the same day you call. Small chips are rebuilt with bonding at the visit, and a bigger break is restored with a crown in the same office.

Usually very little. Most bonding needs no numbing, because the resin is added to the surface of the tooth and little or no enamel is removed. When a chip runs deep or decay is removed first, the tooth is numbed before the work starts.
