Your Extraction, Socket Graft and Future Implant: One Doctor, One Plan

Elsewhere, one office pulls the tooth, an outside oral surgeon grafts the socket, and another office places the implant. At Deluxe Dentistry & Esthetics, Dr. Maxim Godko does all three.

The referral loop

  • One office removes the tooth
  • A surgeon grafts the socket, or nobody does
  • Another office places the implant

At Deluxe Dentistry & Esthetics

  • Extraction and socket graft by Dr. Godko, typically the same visit
  • PRF from your own blood when your case calls for it
  • Your implant placed here when the bone is ready

One plan from extraction day to your new tooth, at either office.

What Happens to the Bone If the Socket Isn’t Grafted?

Pick a path, then step through the healing.

With a graft in the socket, the bone that held your tooth is largely kept for your future implant.

The basics

What Is Socket Preservation?

Socket preservation, also called alveolar ridge preservation, is a bone graft placed in the empty socket right after a tooth is removed and covered so it heals undisturbed. The graft holds the space, keeps the ridge from collapsing and acts as a scaffold your body replaces with new bone, ready for a dental implant.

Chewing through a tooth root is what keeps the bone around it alive, and the loss after an extraction is fastest in the first months. That is why the graft goes in the moment the tooth comes out, and why it matters most for front teeth, where the gum line shows.

What a socket graft protects

Bone for your implant

Keeps the height and width an implant needs to sit fully in solid bone.

Your gum line

Helps prevent the sunken dip that can form where a tooth was removed.

Neighboring teeth

Keeps the bone that supports the teeth on either side of the gap.

Facial support

A full ridge keeps supporting your lips and cheeks.

Fewer grafts later

Preserving bone now can spare you a larger graft before your implant.

Every replacement option

An implant, a bridge or a denture all fit best on a full, even ridge.

How Socket Preservation Is Done

The extraction and the graft typically happen in one visit; your implant follows later. The American Dental Association’s guide to tooth extractions covers what to expect when a tooth comes out.

FAQ

Socket preservation questions, answered

Right after your tooth is removed, graft material is placed in the empty socket and covered so it heals undisturbed. The graft keeps the bone and gum around the socket in place, so a dental implant can go there later.

Pain, infection, advanced decay, gum disease or a fracture below the gum line. The bone that held the tooth is often already damaged by the same problem, which is one more reason to graft the socket the moment the tooth is out.

Not every extraction needs one. A socket graft is recommended when you want to keep the option of a dental implant, when the bone around the tooth is already thin or damaged, and for front teeth, where the gum line shapes your smile. Your exam and 3D scan show whether yours does.

The empty socket heals on its own, and the ridge around it loses width and height within months. That can leave a sunken spot in your gum line, less support for the neighboring teeth and too little bone for an implant, which may then need a larger graft first.

Socket preservation is for an implant placed later, once the graft has healed. When your bone allows it, same-day implants are a separate path: the tooth comes out and the implant typically goes in at the same visit, and you leave with your new teeth the same day. Dr. Godko tells you which path fits your tooth.

Generally a few months. The gum closes over the site within a few weeks, and the graft needs about three to six months to turn into solid bone. Dr. Godko confirms the bone is ready before your implant is scheduled, and if it needs more time, he waits.

The extraction and graft are typically done with local anesthesia, which numbs the area before anything begins, and sedation is available if you prefer it. Afterward, expect soreness and some swelling similar to a regular extraction, and you are typically back to normal activities within a few days.

No. Oral surgery is an in-house service line at Deluxe Dentistry & Esthetics. Dr. Maxim Godko removes the tooth, grafts the socket and later places your implant himself.

The cost is in your personalized treatment plan from your $1 consultation, before the tooth comes out. When the socket has healed, a single implant is starting at $3,199, which includes the implant, the abutment and the crown. 0% financing through Cherry is available, and so are our in-house membership plans.

We accept PPO plans and most carriers, including CIGNA, MetLife, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Delta Dental and GEHA Connection Dental. No Medicaid, DMO or HMO plans accepted. We work with your insurance to ensure you receive the maximum benefit.
