Bonding to Root Canal: Every Depth of Crack Repaired in One Office

Elsewhere, a cracked tooth can bounce from a dentist to an endodontist to an oral surgeon. Here, Dr. Godko finds the crack with bite testing and digital x-rays and repairs it in-house, whatever its depth. Tap a depth to see the repair.

Dental bonding

Same visit

Small chips and surface cracks are sealed with tooth-colored bonding, shaped right on the tooth, with results you see immediately.

Cracked tooth syndrome

Signs and Causes of a Cracked Tooth

A cracked tooth is often called cracked tooth syndrome, because the signs are vague and the crack is usually too fine to see. It happens most in the lower back molars, the teeth that take the most chewing force.

What it feels like

  • Sharp pain when you bite, or the moment you let go
  • A twinge with hot, cold or sweet foods that comes and goes
  • Pain you can’t pin to one tooth, often in a back molar
  • Swelling of the gum around one tooth
  • A rough edge or a line you can feel with your tongue

What cracks a tooth

  • Biting on something hard: ice, nuts, hard candy, a popcorn kernel
  • Clenching or grinding, especially at night
  • Large old fillings that leave thin walls of tooth
  • A tooth that had a root canal and has no crown
  • A blow to the mouth from a fall, a car accident or a sport
  • A sudden temperature change, like ice water after hot food

Craze lines

Hairline marks in the enamel only. Cosmetic, with no pain.

Fractured cusp

A piece of a chewing point breaks off, often around a filling.

Cracked tooth

A crack runs from the chewing surface toward the root.

Split tooth

The crack has divided the tooth into separate pieces.

FAQ

Cracked tooth questions, answered

A craze line is a hairline mark in the enamel only, cosmetic and harmless. A cracked tooth has a crack running from the chewing surface toward the root. A split tooth has cracked into separate pieces. Each one is repaired differently, which is why the exam comes first.

Biting pushes the two sides of the crack apart a tiny amount, and releasing the bite snaps them back, which irritates the nerve. Sharp pain on release is one of the clearest signs of a cracked tooth.

No. A root canal is only needed when the crack has reached the nerve. Many cracks are repaired with bonding, an onlay or a crown alone. Lingering pain with hot or cold is the sign the nerve may be involved.

Fine cracks run in a direction x-rays don’t capture well. Dr. Godko combines digital x-rays with bite testing on each part of the tooth and a light shone through it to find the crack.

A crown covers the tooth and takes the chewing force off the crack, which keeps it from spreading. It protects the tooth; it doesn’t make the crack disappear, which is why treating it early matters.

Yes. When a crack calls for a crown, your new crown is placed the same day, so the tooth is protected before you go home.

No. Cracked tooth pain comes and goes, and pain can also stop because the nerve is dying. A crack doesn’t heal, and every bite can push it deeper, so have it checked.

Yes. Tooth-colored bonding, all-ceramic onlays and crowns are matched to your natural teeth, so the repair blends in, front or back.

It depends on the repair: bonding, an onlay, a crown or a root canal with a crown. You see the cost before treatment. We work with your insurance to ensure you receive the maximum benefit, and 0% financing through Cherry is available.
