- 2 Molded to your teeth Your nightguard is custom-made: a clear, soft (but durable) mouthpiece, precisely molded to your teeth to fit over the arch.
- 3 Worn while you sleep You wear it while you sleep, when the most harmful grinding and clenching happens.
- 4 Checked at your visits Bring your guard to your regular checkups. Every visit includes an examination of your bite and jaw joints.

Nightguards: your questions, answered
A nightguard is a custom-made, clear, soft (but durable) plastic mouthpiece that fits over the arch of your teeth to protect them and your joints (like your temporomandibular joint, or TMJ) from damage. You wear it while you sleep.
A custom nightguard is precisely molded to your teeth after an exam of your teeth, bite and jaw joints, so it fits your mouth instead of a one-size shape. That precise fit is what makes a custom guard far more comfortable and effective than over-the-counter options.
Your visit starts with an exam of your teeth, gums, bite, jaw joints and soft tissues. Your bite is evaluated for signs of grinding and clenching, and your jaw joints are checked for clicking, popping or pain. Then your nightguard is custom-made for your mouth.
Either can work: the choice depends on your bite and your dental work, and it’s made at your exam.
Wear it whenever you sleep, all night. The most harmful grinding and clenching happens during sleep, so that’s when your teeth need the protection. If you also clench during the day, mention it at your exam.
A nightguard protects your teeth rather than switching off the habit. You may still clench or grind while you wear it, but the guard takes the force, so your teeth, crowns and fillings don’t.
