Gum pockets are measured; healthy ones are 1 to 3 mm. Any gum disease is treated first.

Extra gum tissue, bone position or the lip: the reason is identified before treatment. A lip that lifts too high is treated with Botox, which Dr. Godko uses for gummy smiles.

Dr. Maxim Godko performs every gum contouring procedure himself, in-house, at both offices, reshaping the gum line with a laser or a scalpel. There’s no referral to a periodontist.
Extra gum tissue, bone position or an upper lip that lifts too high. The cause is identified before any treatment, because gum contouring alone won’t change a gummy smile that comes from the lip or jaw.
Yes, when the lip is the cause. Dr. Godko uses Botox for gummy smiles: it relaxes the muscles that lift the upper lip, so less gum shows when you smile. When extra gum tissue is the cause, contouring is the fix, and some smiles need both.
When the gums are healthy and the cause was extra gum tissue, the new gum line stays. Good brushing, flossing and checkups keep it that way.
The area is numbed first with local anesthesia, so you feel pressure rather than pain, and sedation is available for patients who prefer it. Some tenderness as the gums heal is normal.
Few. As with any procedure, there’s a small chance of infection or lingering tenderness, which is why gum health is checked first, only the tissue the teeth can spare is removed, and you leave with aftercare instructions and a scheduled follow-up visit. Both offices are ready to immediately assist with any concerns.
Recovery is typically quick: most people are back to their normal activities within a few days while the gums finish healing.
