Treated, not just explained

Treated at the Source, the Same Day, With No Referral

Health guides explain what an abscess is. None of them can drain one. Drainage, a root canal or an extraction happens here, in-house. At Deluxe, the visit that diagnoses your infection also treats it, with no referral to an endodontist or oral surgeon. The American Dental Association’s abscess guide is clear that an abscess needs a dentist.

Tap what you’re feeling

An abscess is a pocket of pus that forms when bacteria reach the pulp of a tooth, most often through decay, gum disease or a crack.

Myths vs facts

Three myths about tooth infections

Tap a card to see the facts.

Why it’s urgent

Why a tooth infection shouldn’t wait

Oral infections left untreated can spread beyond the tooth, which is why they’re handled as a true emergency.

It begins inside the tooth

Bacteria reach the pulp through decay, gum disease or a crack, and pus builds up.

It can travel

Into the jaw, neck and head, and in rare cases into the bloodstream.

It’s preventable

Daily hygiene and routine checkups lower the chance of an abscess.

FAQ

Tooth abscess treatment: your questions, answered

Treated. At Deluxe Dentistry & Esthetics, an abscess is seen the same day you call, and after an exam and digital x-rays Dr. Godko starts treating the source at that visit: draining the infection when needed, then a root canal or an extraction.

Yes. Pain, swelling, a bad taste, pus or a fever with a tooth problem should be seen the same day. Go to the ER first if swelling spreads toward your eye or neck, or you have trouble breathing or swallowing.

No. Swelling and pain can ease when the abscess drains or the nerve stops responding, but the infection at the root is still there and comes back. It needs treatment at the source.

No, not on their own. Antibiotics can’t clean out infected tissue inside the tooth or drain the pus. When they’re needed, they’re prescribed alongside a root canal or an extraction, not instead of it.

Often, yes. Swelling and pus don’t automatically mean the tooth is lost. If the tooth is restorable, a root canal clears the infection and a crown then protects it.

Dr. Godko looks at how much healthy tooth remains, any cracks, the bone around the root and the gum. A restorable tooth is saved with a root canal; a tooth that can’t be restored is removed and its replacement planned at the same visit.

No. Squeezing or puncturing it can damage the tissue and spread the infection. Keep the area clean with gentle warm salt-water rinses and get it treated the same day.

The emergency dentist, unless you have trouble breathing or swallowing, swelling spreading toward your eye or neck, or a high fever. An ER can’t do root canals or extractions, so the source still needs a dentist.

It depends on whether the tooth is saved or removed, and you see your options and the cost before treatment. We work with your insurance to ensure you receive the maximum benefit, 0% financing through Cherry is available, and in-house membership plans are available.
