The question you are really asking
Does It Need to Come Out? One Same-Day Visit Answers It.
Salt-water rinses and cold compresses buy you an evening. They don’t tell you whether the tooth is impacted, infected or damaging the molar beside it. A digital x-ray and an exam with Dr. Maxim Godko do, the same day you call.
And when the answer is removal, you are already in the right chair. Dr. Godko removes impacted wisdom teeth himself, with local anesthesia and nitrous, oral or IV sedation if you prefer it, so there is no oral surgeon referral and no second consultation while the pain goes on.

Why it hurts
What Wisdom Teeth Are, and Why They Cause Pain
Wisdom teeth are the third and last set of molars, usually the final teeth to come in, in early adulthood. Many jaws don’t have room for them, so they come in partway, at an angle or not at all. Those are the teeth that hurt.
Pericoronitis
A flap of gum over a partly erupted tooth traps food and bacteria. The gum swells, throbs and tastes bad, and it flares up again and again.
Impaction
There isn’t room for the tooth to come in straight, so it stays trapped under the gum or bone, often angled into the molar in front of it.
Decay
Wisdom teeth sit so far back that brushing and flossing miss them. Cavities form in the wisdom tooth and in the molar beside it.
Pressure on the neighbor
A tooth growing at an angle pushes on the second molar’s root, which can ache, decay or lose bone support.
Cysts
Rarely, a fluid-filled sac forms around an impacted tooth inside the jawbone and slowly damages the bone and nearby teeth.
Gum disease at the back
Plaque that collects around a hard-to-clean wisdom tooth inflames the gum and bone around both back molars.

Impacted Wisdom Teeth, Removed Where You Are Examined
Simple and surgical wisdom tooth extractions, including impacted teeth, are done by Dr. Godko in the same office where you are examined, with the sedation you choose.
Inflamed gum around a partly erupted tooth is cleaned and treated in-house too, and when the pain turns out to be a neighboring molar, a root canal saves that tooth.
Planned wisdom teeth removal- Simple and surgical extractions
- Impacted wisdom teeth included
- IV sedation given by Dr. Godko
- Vital signs monitored throughout
If it comes out
How a Wisdom Tooth Is Removed
A tooth that is fully in comes out quickly; deeply impacted teeth, or several at once, take longer.
- 1
Numbing
The area is numbed completely with local anesthesia. Nitrous, oral or IV sedation is added if you choose it.
- 2
Reaching the tooth
A tooth that is fully in is lifted out. An impacted tooth needs a small opening in the gum, and sometimes a little bone is removed to reach it.
- 3
Removing it
A deeply impacted tooth is often taken out in sections, which keeps the opening small.
- 4
Closing up
The socket is cleaned, stitches are placed when needed, and gauze helps a protective blood clot form.
Recovery
What Healing Looks Like
Every mouth heals at its own pace. You leave with aftercare instructions and a follow-up visit is scheduled. Here is the usual pattern after a wisdom tooth comes out.
-
Right after
Bite on gauze, rest with your head raised and use a cold compress on the cheek. Some oozing is normal.
-
The next few days
Swelling peaks, then starts to ease. Stick to soft, cool foods and chew on the other side.
-
As it settles
Gentle warm salt-water rinses after meals keep the area clean, and you are typically back to normal activities within a few days.
-
Over time
The gum closes over the socket, and the bone underneath keeps filling in.
Avoid straws, smoking and vaping for the first few days: the suction can pull the clot loose and cause dry socket.

FAQ
Wisdom tooth pain questions, answered
Not every time. Dr. Godko reads your digital x-ray with you and explains whether the tooth is impacted, decayed, infected or damaging the molar beside it. A wisdom tooth that keeps flaring up, can’t be kept clean or is harming its neighbor comes out; a healthy, cleanable one can stay.
Pericoronitis is an infected flap of gum over a partly erupted wisdom tooth, where food and bacteria get trapped. It is one of the most common causes of wisdom tooth pain, with swelling at the back of the jaw, a bad taste and pain when you bite or open wide.
Yes. A wisdom tooth trapped under the gum or bone still presses on the tooth in front of it and can become infected around its crown. That is why the x-ray matters: it shows what you can’t see in the mirror.
Each flare-up is the gum around the tooth getting inflamed again, then settling down. Pain that keeps returning is a sign the cause is still there, and the flare-ups keep coming until it is treated.
A cavity, a cracked molar, a gum abscess or jaw clenching can all feel like wisdom tooth pain. An exam and a digital x-ray find the real source, so you treat the tooth that is actually causing it.
Dr. Maxim Godko, in-house. He performs simple and surgical extractions, including impacted wisdom teeth, and gives nitrous, oral or IV sedation himself, so there is no oral surgeon referral, no second consultation and no wait for a surgery date.
No. When a prescription is right for an infection, it calms the flare-up, but it doesn’t remove the gum flap, the trapped tooth or the decay causing it. Treating the tooth itself is what stops the cycle.
Wisdom tooth removal is typically done with local anesthesia alone. If you prefer sedation, nitrous oxide, oral sedation and IV sedation are all given in-house by Dr. Godko, who is certified in all three. After oral or IV sedation, someone drives you home.
It depends on how many teeth come out, whether they are impacted and the sedation you choose, and you see the cost before anything is done. We work with your insurance to ensure you receive the maximum benefit, and 0% financing through Cherry is available.
