Narrow ridge?

Widen the Ridge and Place Your Implants, Typically in One Visit, With One Doctor

Elsewhere, a narrow ridge can mean a graft at a surgeon’s office, months of waiting, then the implant somewhere else. At Deluxe Dentistry & Esthetics, Dr. Maxim Godko, an 8-Time Top Doctor, typically does it in one visit.

The referral loop

  • Referred out for a graft to rebuild the width
  • Months of healing before anyone places an implant
  • Another office and another fee for the implant

At Deluxe Dentistry & Esthetics

  • A $1 implant consultation with a 3D CT scan
  • The ridge widened and the implants typically placed in one visit
  • Grafting, with PRF when your case calls for it, in the same surgery
  • Local anesthesia, with nitrous oxide, oral or IV sedation by Dr. Godko if you prefer it

The basics

What Is Ridge Splitting?

Ridge splitting, also called ridge expansion or split-crest, is a form of horizontal ridge augmentation: it widens a jaw ridge that is too narrow to hold a dental implant. The ridge is divided along its top and gently spread apart, so the implant fits inside your own bone, with graft material filling the gap.

After a tooth is lost, the ridge that held it shrinks, and it usually loses width before it loses height. Gum disease, an injury, a difficult extraction or years under a denture thin it further. When the ridge is still tall enough but too thin, ridge splitting makes room for an implant without waiting months for a separate graft to build the width first.

Why ridge splitting works well for implants

Your own bone

Widened, not transplanted: living bone with its own blood supply surrounds the implant as it heals.

Planned on your scan

Width, height and density measured at every implant site, and a custom surgical guide made from your 3D CT plan.

No donor site

Nothing is taken from elsewhere in your mouth, so only one area heals.

A natural contour

Restoring the width brings back the shape of the gum and jaw, so the new tooth sits in a natural-looking frame.

The width problem

Is Your Ridge Too Narrow for an Implant?

Seen from the end, a narrow ridge can be slimmer than the implant it has to hold. Switch views to compare.

FAQ

Ridge splitting questions, answered

Ridge splitting, also called ridge expansion or split-crest, is a bone expansion technique that widens a jaw ridge too narrow to hold a dental implant. Instead of adding bone from somewhere else, it works with the bone you already have at the implant site.

The top of the ridge is divided with fine surgical instruments, and the inner and outer walls are gently wedged apart in small steps until the ridge is wide enough for the implant. Graft material fills the space between the walls, and the gum is stitched closed over it. At Deluxe Dentistry & Esthetics, Dr. Maxim Godko performs it himself.

Yes, typically in the same visit. Doing both together spares you a separate surgery. When the widened ridge needs to heal first, Dr. Godko tells you before surgery and your implants follow at a later visit.

Ridge splitting widens the bone you already have; a bone graft adds material to rebuild bone that is missing. The two are often used together: a ridge split usually needs graft material to fill the gap it opens, and Dr. Godko does both in the same surgery.

A ridge split is typically done with local anesthesia, so the area is fully numbed before anything starts. Nitrous oxide, oral sedation and IV sedation, all given by Dr. Godko, are available if you would rather relax or sleep through it. Afterward, expect tenderness and some swelling for the first several days.

Most people are typically back to normal activities within a few days. You leave with aftercare instructions and a follow-up visit is scheduled, while the bone keeps healing around the implants, or around the widened ridge, over the following months.

Your ridge split is priced in the personalized plan you receive at your $1 consultation, so you see it before anything is scheduled. The implants it makes room for are priced starting at $3,199 for a single implant, including the implant, the abutment and the crown, and starting at $18,999 per arch for full arch implants. We work with your insurance to ensure you receive the maximum benefit, 0% financing through Cherry is available, and in-house membership plans are available.

No. Oral surgery is an in-house service line at Deluxe Dentistry & Esthetics, and Dr. Maxim Godko does the surgery himself, so you are never sent to another office.

Someone whose ridge is tall enough for an implant but too narrow, with enough bone between its inner and outer walls to be spread apart. It is used most often in the front of the upper jaw, where the ridge commonly thins after tooth loss, and in the lower jaw when the bone allows. Your 3D CT scan confirms the fit, and Dr. Godko decides at your consultation.

A narrow ridge can also be rebuilt with bone grafting, which adds bone to the outside of the ridge. For a whole arch, All-on-4 implants, starting at $18,999 per arch, make the most of the bone you already have. Dr. Godko walks you through each option at your consultation.
