Crown lengthening at Deluxe Dentistry & Esthetics

Crown lengthening reshapes the gums, and the supporting bone when needed, to expose more of a tooth: to save a tooth with decay or a break below the gum line (functional) or to correct a gummy smile (esthetic). At Deluxe Dentistry & Esthetics, Dr. Maxim Godko performs it himself at both offices, starting with a personalized consultation.

Why patients choose us

The Doctor Who Exposes the Tooth Also Plans Its Crown

At many periodontal offices, the crown is someone else’s job. At Deluxe Dentistry & Esthetics, Dr. Maxim Godko plans the new gum line and the crown or veneers together, in-house, and you know the plan and its cost before anything is done.

Before After Simplified illustration. Dashed line: the old gum line.

Why it’s done

Two Reasons, One Procedure

Keep a damaged tooth, or balance a smile. Choose a reason to see what it does.

Decay or a break reaches below the gum line, and the goal is to keep and restore the tooth.

  • A chance to save a tooth that often couldn’t be restored otherwise
  • Lower risk of gum problems around the tooth
  • A more predictable crown
  • A better long-term prognosis

When it’s recommended

When Crown Lengthening Is the Answer

A crown needs enough healthy tooth above the gum to grip, and the gum needs room to stay healthy around the crown’s edge. These are the situations where crown lengthening creates both.

Broken at the gum line

A tooth that cracked or snapped off at or below the gum, leaving too little above it for a crown.

Decay below the gum

A cavity that runs under the gum line, where it can’t be cleaned out and sealed without exposing it.

Too short to hold a crown

Teeth worn down by grinding or acid, or heavily filled, with little height left.

An old crown edge too deep

A previous crown or filling that sits so close to the bone that the gum around it stays inflamed.

A gummy smile

Teeth of normal length covered by extra gum, so they look short when you smile.

An uneven gum line

Gums that sit higher on some teeth than others, evened out before veneers or crowns.

The process

From First Exam to Finished Tooth

Four steps, all under one roof.

  1. 1

    Diagnose

    Exam & x-rays

The tooth, gums and bone are examined with digital x-rays to learn why the gum sits where it does and whether the tooth can be restored.

  2. 2

    Plan

    Personalized consultation

Crown lengthening, gum contouring or another option, chosen together with you.

  3. 3

    Reshape

    In-house

Fully numbed, with sedation available, the gum and, when needed, the bone are reshaped, and the gum is stitched at its new level.

  4. 4

    Restore

    Crown or veneers

A follow-up visit checks healing; once the gums have settled, your new crown is placed, or your smile makeover continues.

FAQ

Crown lengthening questions, answered

If enough healthy tooth shows above the gum, you go straight to the crown. When decay or a break reaches below the gum line, a crown has nothing solid to hold onto, and crown lengthening exposes that tooth first. Your x-rays show which applies.

Yes, when enough sound root remains. Functional crown lengthening exposes the tooth below the break so it can be restored instead of extracted, and Dr. Maxim Godko tells you plainly whether the tooth has a long-term future.

More of the tooth shows, which is the goal. On a back tooth it is barely noticeable; on a front tooth the new gum line is planned with the crown or veneers so the smile stays balanced.

Sometimes. The gum is reshaped, and when needed a small amount of the supporting bone is reshaped too, so the gum heals at a healthy level around the new crown.

The area is numbed with local anesthesia, so you stay comfortable and may feel only some pressure, and sedation is available if you would rather be more relaxed. Some tenderness and mild swelling for a few days afterward is normal.

Most people are back to normal activities within a few days. You leave with aftercare instructions and a follow-up visit is scheduled to check healing. The gums then keep settling at their new level, typically over several weeks to a few months, and front teeth often get extra time because the final gum position matters most where it shows. The tooth is protected while you heal, and your new crown is placed once the gums are ready.

Yes. Esthetic crown lengthening is often one step of a smile makeover: the new gum line is planned around the porcelain veneers or all-ceramic crowns that follow, all in-house.

The gum settles into its new position as it heals, which is why the crown waits until it has. When a small amount of bone is reshaped, the gum has a stable new level to attach to. Gentle daily brushing and flossing protect the result, and your gum line is checked at every exam afterward.

Crown lengthening is priced at your personalized consultation, because the cost depends on how many teeth are involved and whether the reason is functional or esthetic. Coverage depends on your plan and on that reason, and we work with your insurance to ensure you receive the maximum benefit. 0% financing through Cherry and in-house membership plans are also available.

Crown lengthening is a routine periodontal procedure. As with any surgery, some bleeding, swelling and sensitivity can follow, and following your aftercare instructions keeps the risk of infection low. Both offices are ready to immediately assist with any concerns while you heal.
