Filling, Inlay, Onlay or Crown? Keep the Most Natural Tooth

Each option restores more of the tooth than the one before, and all four are done in-house, so the choice follows the tooth. Tap each to see how much of a back tooth it covers.

Restores a bigger area of the biting surface than a filling, staying inside the cusps.

The advantages

Why choose an inlay or onlay over a large filling?

A cracked or decayed tooth doesn’t heal on its own. Restoring it early with the right-sized repair keeps the tooth.

A large filling fills a hole and can weaken the tooth by up to 50%; a bonded inlay or onlay supports the walls around it and can strengthen the tooth by up to 75%. It’s usually chosen when about half or more of a back tooth’s chewing surface is damaged, when a cusp is cracked or worn, or when an old metal filling needs replacing.

The ADA explains how dental crowns work, the next step up when an onlay isn’t enough.

  • Supports the tooth against chewing pressure
  • Keeps more natural tooth than a crown
  • Costs less than a crown
  • All-ceramic matched to your tooth color

FAQ

Inlays and onlays: your questions, answered

When a cavity or old filling is too large for a filling to hold, but the tooth is still strong enough not to need a crown. The inlay or onlay is fitted to the tooth and bonded in place.

That depends on your bite and how you care for it. Daily brushing and flossing, a night guard if you grind, and regular checkups, where Dr. Godko checks its edges and your bite, keep it in service, and if one ever wears or chips it can be replaced.

Much more than a crown, because only the damaged part is replaced and the healthy walls of the tooth stay.

All-ceramic, matched to the color of your tooth, so it blends in instead of showing metal.

By the tooth and the size of the repair, at your personalized consultation, and you see the cost before treatment. Inlays and onlays cost less than a crown, and our membership plans and 0% financing through Cherry can help.

It can protect a weakened cusp by covering it. A deeper crack may need a crown, and Dr. Godko checks which before recommending.

Yes. All-ceramic is shade-matched to the tooth and the teeth beside it.

Your tooth is numbed first with local anesthesia, before it’s prepared, and for patients who prefer it, nitrous oxide, oral and IV sedation are available, given by Dr. Godko himself.

Coverage. An inlay fits inside the cusps, the raised points on a back tooth’s chewing surface. An onlay extends over one or more cusps to protect them, which is why it’s also called a partial crown or half-crown.
