Your exam decides whether a crown, an onlay or a filling is right for the tooth.
Filling, onlay or crown?
Find the right repair for your tooth
Slide to how much of the tooth is broken, cracked or decayed. It’s a guide; your exam decides.
Likely recommendation
An inlay or onlay
Too big for a filling but not big enough for a crown: a tooth-colored “partial crown” keeps more of your natural tooth.
About inlays & onlaysIs a crown right for you?
Reasons a tooth needs a crown
A crown is a custom cap that covers the whole visible part of a tooth. These are the most common reasons one is recommended.
A cavity too big for a filling
When decay has taken too much of the tooth, a filling has too little to hold on to. A crown covers and protects what’s left.
A cracked or broken tooth
A crown holds the cracked parts together so the crack can’t spread every time you bite. A crack that runs deep into the root is checked first; see cracked tooth repair.
After a root canal
A tooth that has had a root canal is more likely to fracture, so a crown is placed to protect it.
A large old filling
Big fillings leave thin walls of tooth that can break. A crown wraps around them before they do.
Worn-down teeth
Grinding and acid wear can shorten teeth. Crowns rebuild their height and shape so your bite works again.
A discolored or misshapen tooth
A crown gives a stained, oddly shaped or poorly formed tooth a new shape and shade that match your smile.
Crown materials
The types of dental crowns
Crowns are made from several materials, each with its own strengths. Your exam and the tooth’s position guide the choice; at Deluxe, crowns are all-ceramic.
All-ceramic (porcelain)
The most natural-looking choice, for front or back teeth. Light passes through it much like enamel, and it’s the type Deluxe places, matched in shade and shape to your neighboring teeth.
Porcelain-fused-to-metal
A metal base under a tooth-colored porcelain surface. The metal can show as a dark line at the gum if the gums recede.
Gold and metal alloy
Very strong and gentle on opposing teeth, and needs little tooth removed. Usually used on back molars that don’t show.

Which crown to choose, when a crown is needed, and how to take care of it.
Three steps
How you get your crown
- 1
Personalized consultation First
The tooth is examined, and your plan and its cost are explained before any work begins.
- 2
Numb & prepare Comfortable
The tooth is numbed, any decay is removed, and the tooth is shaped to make room for the crown; the shade is matched to your neighboring teeth. Sedation is available if you’re anxious.
- 3
Your new crown Fit & bite
Your new crown is placed the same day, bonded in place and checked for fit and bite before you leave.

Crown lengthening
When the gum is in the way
Sometimes a break or decay reaches below the gum, leaving too little tooth for a crown to grip. Crown lengthening reshapes the gum, and some bone, to expose more of the tooth, a chance to save a tooth that might otherwise be lost.
- Saves teeth broken below the gumline
- Gives the crown more tooth to hold
Crown loose or fell off?
- • Keep the crown and call either office: loose and lost crowns are treated as dental emergencies, and both offices are ready to immediately assist.
- • Chew on the other side and keep the area clean.
- • Never use superglue or household adhesives.
Caring for your crown
- • Wait until the numbness wears off before you eat.
- • Go easy on very hard or sticky foods for the first day.
- • Brush and floss around it like a natural tooth.
- • Keep your regular checkups.
- • If you grind, wear a night guard.
- • Don’t chew ice or use your teeth to open packages.

FAQ
Dental crowns: your questions, answered
Yes. At Deluxe Dentistry & Esthetics, your new crown is placed the same day, at both offices.
Yes, they’re the same thing. A crown, often called a cap, covers the whole visible part of a damaged tooth to restore its shape, strength and appearance.
When too much of the tooth is gone for a filling to hold: a large break, a crack, a big old filling or a tooth weakened after a root canal. A crown holds what’s left together so you can chew safely again.
The tooth is numbed before it’s shaped, so you stay comfortable; you may feel some pressure. If you’re anxious, nitrous oxide, oral sedation and IV sedation are available, and Dr. Godko gives all three himself.
All-ceramic. They look natural and have no metal to show as a dark line at the gum, and only all-ceramic materials that have been on the market for at least ten years are used.
There’s no set number of years: it depends on the care the crown gets and the forces on it. Brushing and flossing along the gumline, regular checkups and a night guard if you grind all help it go the distance.
Your crown is priced at your personalized consultation, based on the tooth and anything it needs first, and the cost is in your treatment plan before any work begins. We accept PPO plans and most carriers, including CIGNA, MetLife, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Delta Dental and GEHA Connection Dental. No Medicaid, DMO or HMO plans accepted. We work with your insurance to ensure you receive the maximum benefit. 0% financing through Cherry and in-house membership plans are also available.
A crown protects a weakened or cracked tooth from breaking further, lets you bite and chew normally again, and restores the tooth’s shape and color so it blends in with your smile. It also saves a tooth that might otherwise need to come out.
No. Deluxe offers periodontal, endodontic, prosthodontic and oral surgery services under one roof, so your crown, and any root canal, post or crown lengthening the tooth needs first, is handled in the same office.
