Missing Upper Back Teeth? Your Sinus May Have Dropped

Over time, the sinus drops into the space a lost upper molar leaves behind. Switch views to see what the lift changes.

With the sinus sitting low, there isn’t enough vertical bone above the gum to hold an implant.

The basics

What Is a Sinus Lift?

A sinus lift, also called sinus augmentation, is the upper jaw bone graft: the membrane lining the floor of the sinus is gently raised and bone graft is placed beneath it, so an implant in the molar or premolar area has the height it needs.

The maxillary sinuses sit behind your cheeks, just above the roots of the upper back teeth. When those teeth are lost, the bone beneath the sinus thins and the sinus expands downward, sometimes leaving only a thin wall of bone above the gum. Gum disease, an old infection or injury, and a sinus that is naturally large add to it. That is why a sinus lift is one of the most common bone grafts for implants in the upper jaw, and why so many people told elsewhere that they “don’t have enough bone” for an upper implant can still have one.

Two ways to lift the sinus

Internal sinus lift

The membrane is raised through the same opening made for the implant, and graft goes beneath it. Minimally invasive, it suits a modest shortfall, and the implant often goes in the same appointment.

Lateral window sinus lift

A small window in the side of the upper jaw gives access to the sinus floor for a larger lift. The implant goes in with it when the bone allows, or once the graft has matured.

Your 3D CT scan shows which one you need.

FAQ

Sinus lift questions, answered

A sinus lift, also called sinus augmentation, is a bone graft that adds height to the upper back jaw. The thin membrane lining the sinus floor is gently raised and bone graft is placed beneath it, giving a dental implant in the molar or premolar area enough bone to hold.

Anyone planning an upper back implant where the bone under the sinus is too thin to hold it, usually a molar or premolar that has been missing for a while. Your 3D CT scan at the $1 consultation shows whether you need one.

Yes, when there is enough bone to hold the implant steady at placement: the lift, the graft and the implant happen in the same appointment. When there isn’t, the implant goes in at a later visit, and Dr. Godko tells you which path you are on before surgery.

A sinus lift is typically done with local anesthesia, so the area is fully numbed before anything starts, and nitrous oxide, oral or IV sedation, all given by Dr. Godko, is there if you prefer it. Afterward, expect tenderness, some swelling and a little sinus pressure for the first several days.

The main one is a small tear in the sinus membrane as it is lifted. A small tear is patched and the lift continues; a larger one means the lift is paused and redone once the membrane has healed, usually a few months later. Infection and a graft that doesn’t take are uncommon. Planning from a 3D CT scan and lifting through the implant opening keep the procedure as conservative as possible.

Some tenderness, swelling and sinus pressure are normal at first, and you are typically back to normal activities within a few days. You leave with aftercare instructions, and a follow-up visit is scheduled. The graft keeps maturing into solid bone over the following months, which is when an implant placed later goes in.

Your sinus lift is priced in your personalized treatment plan at your $1 consultation. Your implant is priced separately, with a single implant starting at $3,199, which includes the implant, the abutment and the crown. We work with your insurance to ensure you receive the maximum benefit, with 0% financing through Cherry and in-house membership plans available.

No. Sinus lifts are done in-house at Deluxe Dentistry & Esthetics. Dr. Maxim Godko performs the lift, places the graft and the implant, and gives IV sedation himself.
