Why it matters

What a cleaning does for you

Skip cleanings and plaque hardens into tartar, gums get inflamed, and small problems grow quietly until they hurt. A cleaning every six months stops that early.

Prevents gum disease

Tartar along the gumline is what inflames gums. Removing it keeps them healthy.

Catches cavities early

Small cavities found at a checkup are simple to fix.

Fresher breath

Bacteria in plaque and tartar are a common cause of bad breath.

A brighter smile

The polish lifts many coffee, tea and tobacco stains.

No surprise upsells

Regular or Deep Cleaning? You See the Reason Before Anything Changes

Your gum measurements decide which cleaning you need, not a sales script. Healthy pockets measure 1 to 3 mm. If yours are deeper, you hear the numbers, what they mean and the cost first. The ADA explains how plaque turns into tartar and gum disease.

Regular cleaning

Who it’s for
Healthy gums or mild gingivitis
Where it cleans
Plaque and tartar above the gumline
Numbing
None needed; numbing gel if you’re sensitive
Afterward
Every six months

Deep cleaning

Who it’s for
Gum disease: pockets of 4 mm or more, bone loss or tartar below the gums
Where it cleans
Below the gumline, smoothing the roots so gums can reattach
Numbing
Local anesthesia
Afterward
Periodontal maintenance every 3 to 4 months

Two trained looks

What happens during your cleaning

Here’s the whole visit, in the order it happens.

  1. 1

    A careful look

    Screening

Your hygienist checks every tooth for decay, measures your gums and performs an oral cancer screening.

  2. 2

    Plaque & tartar off

    Scaling

Professional instruments lift away the plaque and hardened tartar that brushing and flossing leave behind.

  3. 3

    Polish & floss

    Polishing

A polish smooths the surface and lifts many coffee, tea and tobacco stains, then a thorough floss finishes the job.

  4. 4

    Exam & a plan

    Exam

Fluoride if it’s recommended for you, then Dr. Godko’s team examines your teeth and x-rays, and you leave with your next visit set.

Your schedule

How often should you have your teeth cleaned?

Tap anything that applies to you. Twice a year keeps healthy gums healthy; some mouths do better with more frequent visits.

Recommended

6

months between cleanings

Twice a year keeps tartar from getting a foothold.

Comfort

Nervous, sensitive, or it’s been a while?

A cleaning involves some mild pressure, but it shouldn’t hurt when your gums are healthy. If they’re tender or there’s a lot of buildup, your hygienist slows down and uses numbing gel.

Very nervous? See your sedation options.

  • Numbing gel for sensitive spots
  • A gentler technique for heavy buildup
  • Nitrous oxide or oral sedation if you’re anxious
  • A team that speaks English, Ukrainian and Russian
  • Evening and Saturday appointments at one of our two offices

FAQ

Teeth cleaning: your questions, answered

A licensed hygienist removes the plaque and hardened tartar that brushing and flossing leave behind, polishes away surface stains, flosses and checks your gums. At Deluxe, Dr. Godko’s team examines your teeth at the same visit.

For healthy gums, every six months. Gum disease, a past deep cleaning, frequent cavities, heavy tartar buildup or dental implants call for a cleaning every three to four months, and Dr. Godko’s team sets your schedule from your exam.

A cleaning involves some light pressure and scraping, but it shouldn’t hurt when your gums are healthy. If your teeth are sensitive or there’s a lot of buildup, your hygienist slows down and uses a numbing gel, and nitrous oxide or oral sedation is available if you’re anxious.

Bleeding is a sign of inflamed gums, not of a rough cleaning. Healthy gums don’t bleed. Your hygienist measures the pocket around each tooth to see whether it’s early gingivitis or gum disease.

Because the gum measurements and x-rays show tartar and infection below the gumline, where a regular cleaning doesn’t reach. At Deluxe, you hear the numbers, the reason and the cost before anything changes, and the decision is yours.

The polish at the end lifts many coffee, tea and tobacco stains. It won’t change your natural shade; for that, professional teeth whitening brightens teeth up to 8 shades.

We accept PPO plans and most carriers, including CIGNA, MetLife, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Delta Dental and GEHA Connection Dental. No Medicaid, DMO or HMO plans accepted. We work with your insurance to ensure you receive the maximum benefit.

Come in. There’s no judgment, whether it’s been five years or twenty. Your first visit starts with an exam to see whether a regular cleaning is enough or your gums need a deep cleaning first.
