What to look for in a sleep apnea dentist

Four things matter most. Here is how each one looks at Deluxe.

01

The medical pathway, done properly

Your risk factors are reviewed in the office. High-risk patients are referred to a sleep study center, a medical sleep specialist makes the diagnosis, and Dr. Godko coordinates with your physician when necessary.

How Are You Sleeping?

Choose what fits your nights to see what it can point to and the next step. It is a guide, not a diagnosis.

What it can point to

Snoring means your breathing is partly blocked. Occasional snoring doesn’t automatically mean sleep apnea, but chronic snoring deserves attention.

  • Mention it at your visit so your risk factors can be reviewed.
  • NightLase is Deluxe’s treatment for snoring.
  • High-risk patients are referred for a sleep study.

Four Steps to Quieter Nights

  1. Dr. Maxim Godko walking with a patient to her sleep consultation, where snoring and sleep apnea concerns are reviewed 1

    Share your concerns

Tell the team about snoring, waking up tired or gasping at night, so your risk factors can be reviewed.

  2. Dr. Maxim Godko examining a patient’s mouth for signs of a crowded airway that can point to sleep apnea 2

    Get checked

Your mouth and airway are examined. If your risk is high, you are referred to a sleep study center and diagnosed by a medical sleep specialist.

  3. Patient in laser safety glasses during a NightLase session for snoring 3

    Treat the snoring

NightLase sessions with Dr. Godko, when he confirms NightLase fits your care.

  4. Well-rested couple laughing over morning coffee, the goal of staying on track after snoring treatment 4

    Stay on track

Follow-up visits check your progress, and Dr. Godko keeps your physician informed when necessary.

Don’t give up on a good night’s sleep. Many people with sleep apnea don’t know they have it. Dr. Maxim Godko wants you to know you’re not alone, help is available, and he wants you to get the restful sleep you deserve.

To spot the warning signs, treat the dental side and work with your physician. At Deluxe, that means treating snoring with NightLase and coordinating with your physician when necessary, while any sleep apnea diagnosis and its medical care stay with your physician.

A physician. Sleep apnea is a medical diagnosis made by a medical sleep specialist after a sleep study. Your dentist often notices the signs first, and if your risk factors are high, Deluxe refers you to a sleep study center.

Yes. Snoring shows that breathing is obstructed, and it can point to sleep apnea, but occasional snoring does not necessarily mean you have it. Chronic snoring, gasping at night or waking up exhausted are reasons to have your risk reviewed.

CPAP is the most common medical treatment, though many people find the mask hard to sleep with. Some dentists fit custom oral appliances that hold the lower jaw forward, a recognized option for mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea; a drugstore snore guard is not a treatment for a diagnosed condition. At Deluxe, sleep care is NightLase, a laser treatment for snoring. The right treatment for diagnosed sleep apnea is decided with your physician, so never stop a prescribed CPAP on your own.

A laser treatment for snoring that Dr. Godko performs himself. Gentle laser heat makes the tissues of the throat and mouth contract and firm up, so the airway stays more open at night.

Obstructive sleep apnea is a sleep disorder in which the airway repeatedly narrows or closes during sleep, causing pauses in breathing. Each pause lowers your oxygen and briefly wakes the brain, often many times a night, so sleep is never truly restful.
