With oral or IV sedation, yes: someone drives you home. Tell the team when you call if you’d like sedation, so they can plan your visit.

Yes. Facial or gum swelling points to an infection even when the pain is mild, and it’s seen the same day. If swelling spreads toward your eye or throat, or you have a fever or trouble swallowing, go to the ER.

Yes. Small veneer chips are repaired, a veneer that came off can be rebonded when it’s intact, and a damaged bridge is repaired or replaced in-house. Bring any pieces with you. See broken veneer repair.

It is when there’s pain, a sharp edge, bleeding or a large piece missing, because a crack can run deeper with every bite. A small chip with no pain still deserves a prompt visit, and it’s often bonded at that visit. See broken tooth repair.

Rinse gently with warm salt water, press clean gauze or a cloth on the cut for about 10 minutes and hold a cold compress outside the mouth. Call so the area and the nearby teeth are checked. If the bleeding won’t stop or the cut is deep, go to the ER.

Whatever threatens your health comes first: swelling, infection or bleeding. Then the pain is relieved, and then the teeth are repaired and your smile restored, often at the same visit.

Try to ease it out gently with floss. Never use a pin, knife or other sharp object, which can cut the gum or scratch the tooth. If floss won’t remove it, or the gum is swollen and sore, call to have it removed.
