Causes and risk factors

What Causes Gum Disease

Plaque starts it. Other factors decide how fast it moves and how hard it is to control.

Plaque and tartar

Bacteria in plaque inflame the gums. Plaque left in place hardens into tartar, which brushing can’t remove.

Smoking and vaping

Tobacco is one of the strongest risk factors. It hides bleeding, so the disease can advance unnoticed, and it slows healing.

Diabetes

Uncontrolled blood sugar makes gum infections more likely and harder to settle.

Hormonal changes

Pregnancy and other hormonal shifts make gums more prone to swelling and bleeding.

Genetics

Some people are more susceptible, and gum disease and early tooth loss often run in families.

Dry mouth and crowding

Less saliva lets plaque build faster, and crowded or overlapping teeth are harder to keep clean.

Quick self-check

Keep them healthy

Pocket depths are measured at every exam, so gum disease gets caught early, before it costs you teeth.

Deep Cleaning or Regular Cleaning?

A regular cleaning cares for healthy gums above the gumline. A deep cleaning reaches below it to treat diagnosed gum disease, and your pocket measurements decide which one you need.

Deep cleaning vs regular cleaning

Dr. Godko explains the difference, and what to ask if you’ve been told you need a deep cleaning.

FAQ

Gum disease treatment in Skillman, NJ: your questions, answered

It is priced at your personalized consultation, once every pocket is measured, and your written plan shows the cost before treatment starts. We accept PPO plans and most carriers, including CIGNA, MetLife, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Delta Dental and GEHA Connection Dental. No Medicaid, DMO or HMO plans accepted. We work with your insurance to ensure you receive the maximum benefit. 0% financing through Cherry and the in-house Adult Perio membership plan are available too.

Often, yes. A deep cleaning removes the bacteria and tartar below the gumline, and as the infection clears, the gums tighten around the teeth. Every pocket is measured again after healing to see how it responded. Bone already lost doesn’t grow back on its own, which is why early treatment protects the most and maintenance every three to four months keeps the result.

It is treated here, at every stage. The hygienists at our Skillman, NJ office perform your deep cleaning and periodontal maintenance, and Dr. Maxim Godko performs every gum surgery himself, from gum grafting to the extraction, bone grafting and implants if a tooth can’t be saved. No referral is needed.

The deep cleaning is typically done in two visits, one side of the mouth at a time. A re-evaluation visit after healing measures every pocket again, and then periodontal maintenance every three to four months keeps the disease under control, all at the same office.

Every pocket is measured again at the re-evaluation visit. A pocket that is still deep gets a focused next step: another targeted cleaning, Arestin placed in the pocket or maintenance visits closer together. Where gum surgery is needed, Dr. Godko performs it in-house, so your care never moves to another office.

Saving your teeth comes first. Treatment clears the infection and protects the support that is left, which gives a loose tooth its best chance, and Dr. Godko tells you plainly which teeth have a long-term future. When one can’t be saved, the extraction and its replacement happen in the same office.

A deep cleaning is done with local anesthesia, one side of the mouth at a time, so the area is numb and most patients feel only pressure, and you can ask for numbing at any visit. If you’re anxious, nitrous oxide, oral sedation or IV sedation, in which you can still respond, is available, and Dr. Godko gives IV sedation himself.

Yes. The Skillman, NJ office is open Friday, 9 am to 5 pm, and Monday to Thursday, 9 am to 6 pm. On Saturdays, from 9 am to 2 pm, and on Wednesday and Thursday evenings until 7 pm, our Lawrenceville, NJ office treats gum disease at every stage too.

At 40 Nevius Blvd, Suite 150, Skillman, NJ 08558, in the Montgomery Promenade just off Route 206 in Montgomery Township. Without traffic, it is about 24 minutes from Somerset, NJ by County Route 533 and Route 206, and about 29 minutes from Ringoes, NJ by Route 31 and County Route 518.

Home care keeps gums healthy and stops gingivitis, but it can’t reach tartar that has formed below the gumline in a pocket. Once pockets have formed, a deep cleaning is the only way to clean the roots, and daily brushing and flossing then protect the result.
