Graft, Monitor or Treat the Cause? Your Measurements Decide

Not every receding gum needs surgery. At your personalized consultation, Dr. Maxim Godko measures your recession, finds the cause and tells you which of three paths fits.

Monitor

Mild recession that is stable, with no sensitivity and enough firm gum. Measured at every exam.

Treat the cause

Gum disease, brushing too hard or a lip frenum that pulls on the gum. Stopped first, so recession stops progressing.

Graft

Exposed roots, sensitivity at the gumline, thin gum that keeps receding, or too little gum around an implant.

Why gums recede

Why Gums Recede

Finding the cause matters as much as fixing the recession, or it comes back.

Gum disease

Receding gums are a warning sign of gum disease, which breaks down the tissue and bone that hold teeth in place.

Brushing too hard

Aggressive brushing can wear the gum back and expose the root surface.

A tight lip attachment

A long frenulum can pull on the gum, leading to recession and sometimes a gap between the front teeth.

Grinding and clenching

Heavy force on the teeth stresses the thin gum and bone over the roots, often leaving notches at the gumline. A custom nightguard protects against that force.

Thin gums and tooth position

Some people are born with thin gum tissue, and teeth that sit or move outside the bone, including during braces or aligner treatment, have little gum covering them.

Tobacco and piercings

Smoking and vaping weaken gum tissue, and lip or tongue jewelry rubbing on the gum can wear it away.

Prevention

Keeping the Gum Line Where It Belongs

A graft stays healthy when the cause stays controlled: gum pockets measured at every exam, periodontal maintenance where gum disease was the cause, and all-ceramic crowns with no metal edge to show if the gum line shifts.

FAQ

Gum grafting in Skillman, NJ: your questions, answered

At 40 Nevius Blvd, Suite 150, Skillman, NJ 08558, in the Montgomery Promenade just off Route 206 in Montgomery Township. It’s open Monday to Thursday, 9 am to 6 pm, and Friday, 9 am to 5 pm. Call (609) 303-2005 or book online.

Gum grafting is priced at your personalized consultation, because it depends on how many teeth are involved and how much gum each needs. Your treatment plan shows the cost before anything is scheduled, and 0% financing through Cherry and in-house membership plans are available.

Coverage depends on your plan. We accept PPO plans and most carriers, including CIGNA, MetLife, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Delta Dental and GEHA Connection Dental. No Medicaid, DMO or HMO plans accepted. We work with your insurance to ensure you receive the maximum benefit, and your treatment plan shows your cost before the graft is done.

When the recession is progressing, usually yes: covering an exposed root protects it, typically eases root sensitivity at that tooth, and rebuilds gum the tooth or implant needs for support. When the recession is mild and stable, it may only need to be measured at every exam, and Dr. Godko tells you which applies to your teeth before you decide.

There’s no single cutoff. What matters is how much gum and bone each tooth still has, and recession that keeps progressing exposes more root surface, raises sensitivity and the risk of root decay, and takes away gum that supports the tooth. That’s why it’s worth measuring early: Dr. Godko measures the recession tooth by tooth and tells you whether a graft, monitoring or treating the cause fits.

Yes. Dr. Maxim Godko, an 8-Time Top Doctor, performs every gum graft himself, in-house, at our Skillman, NJ office and in Lawrenceville, NJ. Periodontal care is provided under one roof, so you are never referred out, and the same doctor treats the cause of the recession and checks the graft at your follow-up visit.

Most patients are typically back to normal activities, work included, within a few days. Eat soft, cool foods at first, chewing on the other side, and don’t brush the graft until your instructions say so. Your aftercare instructions list when to move back to normal foods.

Tenderness at the graft site, and at the roof of the mouth if tissue was taken from there, is expected for a few days. Call us if bleeding won’t stop, if swelling gets worse instead of better, or if the graft looks loose or out of place. Both offices are ready to immediately assist, with same-day visits, and your follow-up visit checks that the graft is healing.

Yes. The area is numbed with local anesthesia first, and if you’re nervous, Dr. Godko can add nitrous oxide, oral sedation or IV sedation, a deep, sleep-like state in which you can still respond. He gives each one himself. With oral or IV sedation, plan for someone to drive you home; with local anesthesia alone or nitrous oxide, you can drive yourself.

Without traffic, about 21 minutes from Pennington, NJ by Cherry Valley Road and Route 206, and about 29 minutes from Ringoes, NJ by Route 31 and County Route 518, to our office in the Montgomery Promenade.
