The question you are really asking

Does It Need to Come Out? One Same-Day Visit Answers It.

Salt-water rinses and cold compresses buy you an evening. They don’t tell you whether the tooth is impacted, infected or damaging the molar beside it. A digital x-ray and an exam with Dr. Maxim Godko do, the same day you call.

And when the answer is removal, you are already in the right chair. Dr. Godko removes impacted wisdom teeth himself, with local anesthesia and nitrous, oral or IV sedation if you prefer it, so there is no oral surgeon referral and no second consultation while the pain goes on.

  1. 1 Constant pain or swelling from a wisdom tooth is handled as an emergency.

  3. 3 If it needs to come out, it is removed in-house, with sedation if you choose.

Why it hurts

What Wisdom Teeth Are, and Why They Cause Pain

Wisdom teeth are the third and last set of molars, usually the final teeth to come in, in early adulthood. Many jaws don’t have room for them, so they come in partway, at an angle or not at all. Those are the teeth that hurt.

Pericoronitis

A flap of gum over a partly erupted tooth traps food and bacteria. The gum swells, throbs and tastes bad, and it flares up again and again.

Impaction

There isn’t room for the tooth to come in straight, so it stays trapped under the gum or bone, often angled into the molar in front of it.

Decay

Wisdom teeth sit so far back that brushing and flossing miss them. Cavities form in the wisdom tooth and in the molar beside it.

Pressure on the neighbor

A tooth growing at an angle pushes on the second molar’s root, which can ache, decay or lose bone support.

Cysts

Rarely, a fluid-filled sac forms around an impacted tooth inside the jawbone and slowly damages the bone and nearby teeth.

Gum disease at the back

Plaque that collects around a hard-to-clean wisdom tooth inflames the gum and bone around both back molars.

Impacted Wisdom Teeth, Removed Where You Are Examined

Simple and surgical wisdom tooth extractions, including impacted teeth, are done by Dr. Godko in the same office where you are examined, with the sedation you choose.

Inflamed gum around a partly erupted tooth is cleaned and treated in-house too, and when the pain turns out to be a neighboring molar, a root canal saves that tooth.

If it comes out

How a Wisdom Tooth Is Removed

A tooth that is fully in comes out quickly; deeply impacted teeth, or several at once, take longer.

  1. 1

    Numbing

The area is numbed completely with local anesthesia. Nitrous, oral or IV sedation is added if you choose it.

  2. 2

    Reaching the tooth

A tooth that is fully in is lifted out. An impacted tooth needs a small opening in the gum, and sometimes a little bone is removed to reach it.

  3. 3

    Removing it

A deeply impacted tooth is often taken out in sections, which keeps the opening small.

  4. 4

    Closing up

The socket is cleaned, stitches are placed when needed, and gauze helps a protective blood clot form.

Recovery

What Healing Looks Like

Every mouth heals at its own pace. You leave with aftercare instructions and a follow-up visit is scheduled. Here is the usual pattern after a wisdom tooth comes out.

  1. Right after

Bite on gauze, rest with your head raised and use a cold compress on the cheek. Some oozing is normal.

  2. The next few days

Swelling peaks, then starts to ease. Stick to soft, cool foods and chew on the other side.

  3. As it settles

Gentle warm salt-water rinses after meals keep the area clean, and you are typically back to normal activities within a few days.

  4. Over time

The gum closes over the socket, and the bone underneath keeps filling in.

Avoid straws, smoking and vaping for the first few days: the suction can pull the clot loose and cause dry socket.

FAQ

Wisdom tooth pain in Skillman, NJ: your questions, answered

Yes. Call (609) 303-2005 or (609) 400-1393 and you’re seen the same day at both offices, including our Skillman, NJ office in the Montgomery Promenade, just off Route 206. A digital x-ray and an exam with Dr. Maxim Godko find the cause, and when the tooth has to come out, it can be removed at the same visit.

It’s removed here. Dr. Godko performs simple and surgical extractions himself, in-house, including impacted wisdom teeth, and oral surgery is one of Deluxe Dentistry & Esthetics’ own service lines. There is no referral, no second consultation and no wait for a surgery date.

It’s an online rule of thumb for taking a pain reliever on a schedule for a few days. Medication depends on your health history, so that decision belongs with your physician or pharmacist. What no rule can do is remove the cause: a wisdom tooth that keeps hurting still has an inflamed gum flap, an impaction or decay behind it, and a same-day exam and x-ray find it.

Many people notice it most during a flare-up of the gum over a partly erupted tooth, when biting or opening wide, and at night. Pain that wakes you, keeps coming back or comes with swelling or a bad taste is a sign to be seen, not waited out.

It depends on how many teeth come out, whether they are impacted and the sedation you choose. Dr. Godko explains it at the exam, and you see the cost before anything is done. Without insurance, our in-house membership plans discount treatment, and 0% financing through Cherry is available.

It depends on your plan. We accept PPO plans and most carriers, including CIGNA, MetLife, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Delta Dental and GEHA Connection Dental. No Medicaid, DMO or HMO plans accepted. We work with your insurance to ensure you receive the maximum benefit, and you see your cost before treatment.

Yes. Most wisdom teeth come out with local anesthesia alone, and if you prefer more, Dr. Godko gives IV sedation himself: you rest in a deep, sleep-like state and can still respond to him, and most patients remember little afterward. Nitrous oxide and oral sedation are available too. After oral or IV sedation, someone drives you home.

Yes. On Saturdays, our Lawrenceville, NJ office, about 22 minutes from the Skillman, NJ office without traffic, sees same-day visits from 9 am to 2 pm, and it’s open until 7 pm on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Any other time, leave a message at either office: emergency messages are handled first when the office opens.

Without traffic, about 10 minutes from Princeton, NJ on Route 206 and about 18 minutes from Plainsboro, NJ on County Route 518. If you may choose oral or IV sedation, bring someone to drive you home.

An ache that comes and goes can be booked soon. Constant pain or swollen gum at the back is seen the same day. Swelling spreading toward the eye or throat, a fever or trouble swallowing needs care right away, and trouble breathing means 911.

Same-day smile restoration

We don’t just stop the emergency. You leave with your smile restored.

With emergency, general, cosmetic and implant care all in-house, the problem is resolved and your smile restored at the same visit whenever possible.
