When you sleep, the soft palate and tongue can sag back and narrow the airway. A mandibular advancement device holds the jaw and tongue slightly forward.
Without it, the relaxed tongue and soft tissue can block the airway and restrict airflow, which is what causes snoring and breathing pauses.
