Some tenderness and mild sensitivity are normal for a short time while the gums heal, and as with any procedure there’s a small chance of infection, which is why gum health is checked first, only the tissue the teeth can spare is removed, and you leave with aftercare instructions and a scheduled follow-up visit. Contouring alone also won’t change a gummy smile that comes from the lip; Botox is the fix for that.
When the gums are healthy and the cause was extra gum tissue, the new gum line stays. Good brushing, flossing and checkups keep it that way.
When extra gum tissue is the cause, usually yes: it’s typically completed in a single appointment, it shows more of each tooth so short-looking teeth look their natural length, it evens the line that frames veneers or crowns, and most people are back to their normal activities within a few days. When the lip or the bone is the cause, Dr. Godko tells you, and Botox or crown lengthening is the better fix.
It can be any of the three: extra gum tissue, bone position or an upper lip that lifts too high. Dr. Godko finds which at your consultation, before any treatment, because gum contouring alone won’t change a gummy smile that comes from the lip or jaw. Extra tissue is contoured, bone too close to the gum edge needs crown lengthening, and a lip that lifts too high is treated with Botox.
